Buyers are Getting More for Their Money

June 12, 2017

Last week began with the metals advancing only to falter at the end of the week. As the Long Beach Show was in full swing, buyers and sellers were trying to make sense of the market and still do some business. An old complaint came up at this show, ‘it is tough to find nice coins at today’s levels.’ There are lots of dealers offering nice coins at premium prices but few are willing to let go of their more eye appealing inventory at current Market prices. It used to be that the upper 75% of the graded coins dictated market values, but it seems like the less eye appealing coins are now dominating the marketplace thus creating the lower values.

One point of significance in this current downturn: as prices fall buyers have the ability to purchase more coins at the current lower levels. This means if you have $100,000 to spend and the market falls 25% then it will take only $75,000 to purchase the same coins. Many dealers feel this is good in the long term for the numismatic economy.

Heritage Auctions hosted the official auction at the Long Beach Expo. One of the highlights was the 1652 Pine Tree Shilling Large Planchet in PCGS MS65 with CAC approval which brought $141,000. Listed below are a few more noteworthy coins with prices realized from this important sale.
