NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Dealers Attempt to Attract Buyers with Lower Prices

April 24, 2017

Heritage Auctions will host the official sale for Central States taking place this week in Schaumburg, Illinois. Advanced collectors will have the opportunity to acquire an extremely rare 1776 Continental Dollar; this one is Pewter and is certified by NGC as MS63. Another rarity available is the 1795 Capped Bust $10 Gold 13 Leaves in NGC MS62+ with the CAC sticker. While there are about 20 coins certified higher this coin should always be a highlight at any auction; the current NumisMedia Market value is $132,500. Below we listed some other potential favorite rarities from this important sale.

There is a long list of adjustments in this week's HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Rarities in recent auctions made for several Market value increases with the 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar advancing to $56,500 in MS62 and the 1803 Bust Half Small 3 jumping to $11,250 in AU58.

Seated Halves have a consistent following but right now most buyers want something that is super rare or has great eye appeal. The 1839 with No Drapery certainly qualifies as a rarity especially in higher Mint State. This week the MS65 increased to $128,500 with only five total certified by PCGS and NGC; only one grades higher in MS66. However, with a population of 20 coins in MS64 which includes + designated coins, the Market dropped to $32,750.

Walkers remain very active but buyers are rather selective in this market. Any detrimental marks or color will negate a premium price on better date early mint marked coins. The 1918 D in MS64 is up to $4,750 while the 1921 in MS64 climbed to $10,750 Market. There are a sizable number of coins certified in MS64 with 187 in both services but the PQ coins are the ones that dictate this higher value. Borderline certified or low-end will not command this higher price level.
