NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Heritage Hosts $46 Million Sale at Central States
April 27, 2015
A successful Central States Numismatic Society Convention provided Heritage Auctions an opportunity to showcase one of their top auctions of the year. Their featured Platinum Night contained rarity after rarity and the prices realized bore strong evidence that the market for great rarities is substantial if not spectacular.
The sale realized over $46 million, and while there were numerous highlights, the coin that stood out the most was the 1880 $4 Gold Coiled Hair Stella in NGC PR67 with the CAC sticker. It is the highest certified for this rare date with only 10 coins originally minted and it brought a whopping $1,821,250.
The 1879 $4 Gold Coiled Hair Stella also has a mintage of just 10 coins, although at least 12 coins have been traced. The coin was certified by PCGS as PR65 and has the CAC sticker of approval. This date shows five coins grading higher with the highest being PR67. With so few Coiled Hair examples available, competition for these coins is simply incredible. This PR65 realized $881,250.

The metals have had a fairly tight range over the last three weeks so the charts in this week's Moderns Price Guide reveal very minor changes. This is especially the case for Eagles, Modern Commemoratives, and Buffalo Gold. The majority of adjustments are to the downside but generally just a few dollars.
In the Kennedy Half Dollar chart, the 1964 Accented Hair Proofs are in strong demand, higher in PR66 at $115 Market and PR68 is at $290. In Cameo, the PR68 and PR69 Kennedy Half Dollars both advanced to $1,100 and $1,675, respectively.
The metals have begun the week advancing to $1,203 for Gold and $16.40 for Silver; Platinum is currently at $1,147.
