NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Lower Premiums for U.S. Gold
January 5, 2015
Collectors in the buying mood will be happy to see that 2015 is beginning with some very low premiums for generic U.S. Gold coins. This is especially so for $20 Liberty and Saint Gaudens, in grades Good all the way through MS62 for the Liberty and up to MS64 for the Saint. We list nine grades from AU50 to MS64 for the Saint Gaudens and the Market price has a difference of no more than $10 from one grade to the next until you reach the MS63 when it increases $20 to $1,320; that is only $70 higher than the AU50 Market price. The MS64 Market is only $1,365, which is down from this time one year ago when the MS64 was $1,480; Gold was at $1,225 then, today it is at $1,199.
The chart below shows the Market price for U.S. Gold coins in MS60 last year versus the current Market price and the percentage change. Note that the $5 Liberty and Indian both increased for the year while all others decreased.

This week's HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide was mostly unchanged for Half Dollars through Silver Dollars as buyers were concentrating on year-end activities. However, as we mentioned earlier for Twenties, all common U.S. Gold prices ended the year on a downturn. There were more sellers than buyers although this is somewhat typical at the end of the year. This could change at any time with a more positive uptick in Gold.
