Activity Increases with Rising Gold Market

October 28, 2013

The metals have been on the rise over the last couple of weeks and some of the Moderns charts are showing the results. Buffalo Gold has been active since they were first released by the Mint in 2006. In the past week the common MS69 $50 Gold Buffalo is higher by 2.65%, now at $1,355 Market. However, it is down since the first of the year by 19.82% when it was listed at $1,690. The PR69 $50 Gold Buffalo began the year at $1,715 Market which is now down to $1,390; lower by 18.95%. Of course, this is when Gold was at $1,693.75. Today, it is trading at $1,353.80.

Common Gold Eagles have strengthened lately with the $50 Gold now at $1,375 Market in MS69. The Market price at the beginning of the year was $1,710. The PR69 $50 Gold Eagle is currently $1,545, while in January it was $1,840. This is down 16.03%. Many gold analysts feel this presents a good opportunity to get into this market at a 16% discount of January prices.

There are several better date $25 Gold Eagles that carry high premiums over the common dates. These have maintained their values even though Gold has dropped this year. In fact, several of them have even increased during this period. The 1991 $25 Gold Eagle in MS69 has jumped from $2,450 in January to the current $2,600, an increase of 6.12%. The 1988 $25 Gold Eagle in MS69 has fared even better with an increase of 12% from $1,375 in January to the current $1,540. This is not bad considering Gold is down 20% over the same timeframe.

In this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide there are a few increases to some Kennedy Half Dollars. But more significantly, the Proof 1964 in grades PR65 through PR69, including the Accented Hair variety, have increased substantially since the first of the year and the demand is quite strong. Prior to this year the Accented Hair was somewhat ignored by the masses. However, this year it has been recognized in a big way and numerous dealers are consistently trying to buy these coins. The following chart shows the current Market price for the Accented Hair variety in various grades and the value in January, along with the percentage increase.
