Summer FUN in Orlando

The summer heat continues but it has not carried over to the coin market. Dealers are reporting a slowdown in retail sales although the metals are keeping them busy. In the last couple of months the metals have shuffled back and forth keeping buyers wondering what to do next. Gold has fallen below the $1,600 mark again this past week, thus providing another opportunity for buyers to add to their holdings at more favorable levels. The Proof one ounce Gold Eagle is trading at $1,700 among dealers as long as it has the original packaging. The 2009 UHR is down slightly to $2,350 Market in MS69. Circulated Silver Dollars continue to hold fairly steady now at $27,750 per bag of 1,000 coins.

Dealers are headed to Orlando this week for the Annual Summer FUN Show. They are looking for some help from the metals to add a spark to the show and hopefully increase attendance and sales. Some dealers will bring their families with them so they can take advantage of the weather and location for some R & R. In this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide most of the adjustments were minor. Indian and Lincoln Cents remain active at present levels with collectors always looking for specific dates and grades. While the market for Buffalo Nickels and Mercury Dimes is somewhat lethargic, there are still sales at current Market for many of the better dates.

Key date coins remain very active even though Market prices have fallen for some over the last year. Several years prior they had a long run of increases so the downturn and profit taking makes sense. For example, the 1937 D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel always attracts buyers but with the large number of coins available in the marketplace it is a coin that requires a discount to sell. Currently, there is a group of 17 coins available on the teletype and they all grade AU53 to AU58. We have monitored the sale of at least 30 other coins over the last couple of months. The good news is that most key date coins will attract interested buyers at levels close to the current Market price as long as they do not have any negative features.
