NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
September 19, 2011
Coin Market Steady, Metals Lower
The metals begin the week at much lower levels. Gold is bouncing around $1,785 and Silver is $39.50. Despite the downturn, the Whitman Philly Show last week was a little better than expected for most dealers. Retail was just okay and somewhat limited by the amount of traffic throughout the show. Still, most dealers felt it was much better than Long Beach a week earlier. Dealers are still confident and feel the coin market will absorb just about anything that is original and has eye appeal. The majority of action takes place in pre 1940 coins with most advanced collectors looking for classic coins from 1800 to 1904.
In this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide many of the increases are for coins that we have not seen in the market for awhile. Copper has a tremendous following and when unusual Half and Large Cents become available, buyers are quick to react. The 1808 over 7 Half Cent is higher in Fine to Extra Fine with the latter now at $3,225. The 1828 12 Stars Half Cent is up to $2,725 Market in MS64 Brown. In Large Cents, the 1793 Lettered Edge has advanced in most grades up to MS62 as has the 1793 Liberty Cap now at $210,000 in AU55.
There has been a lot more activity for Indian and Lincoln Cents in Mint State grades other than Red. Obviously, the Red coins are the most desirable, but have become a little pricey for some collectors. The Red and Brown or Brown coins can be just as attractive just not as brilliant. Collectors have been watching these coins for some time and the prices they are willing to pay have increased. Of course, they are still concerned with eye appeal for the grade. This week the 1864 L Indian Cent jumped to $640 in MS64 Brown and the 1871 advanced to $1,075 in MS64 RB. The 1914 D Lincoln is higher in MS65 Brown at $6,850 and the 1918 in MS65 RB is now $170.
