High Grade Moderns in Demand

As a result of a very enthusiastic FUN Show and major auctions, new prices for many dates and grades have been adjusted. The majority of advances have been in pre-1930 classic coins. The one drawback has been that Gold and Silver have drifted downward over the last week, although this could lead to renewed buying opportunities for investors.

In this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide, there are a lot of advances in MS67 early Washington Quarters. The 1936 S is up to $2,425 Market, while the 1937 D jumped to $1,775. Even the 1938 S increased to $1,225. Always in demand are the early Proof Lincoln Cents. These low mintage coins attract serious collectors when they go to auction. This week the truly rare 1909 VDB rose to $43,500 in PR66 Red and the PR67 is up to $54,500. This date nearly always brings a premium. Another date that brings out eager buyers is the 1916; in PR65 RB the Market price advanced to $4,150 and in PR66 RB it shot up to $6,150.

Jefferson Nickels typically show only minor changes. However, recently there has been a robust demand for the rare high grades in PR67, 68, & 69. If the coin is a Deep Cameo with strong contrast, buyers are even more aggressive. The 1950 in DC PR67 is at a higher Market of $4,450 and the 1939 in PR68 is up to $3,750. The 1953 DC increased to $2,850 in PR68 and $10,000 in PR69. In the Modern Bullion issues, most of the changes are to the downside due to the decline in the spot metal prices. Also, many of the PR70 Silver Eagles continue to adjust to lower levels based on lesser demand and an increase in the populations of several dates.
