NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
April 5, 2010
Increased Demand for Early Proof Lincoln Cents
The Santa Clara Coin Expo begins this week and, so far, the metals are cooperating, with Gold up to nearly $1,130 an ounce. Proof Gold Eagles, in the original government packaging, are trading higher at $1,700 per ounce among dealers. Proof Silver Eagles, in original boxes, are up to $54. Buffalo Gold, UHR, and Modern Gold Commems are very active at current Market prices. Prooflike and Early Release UHR's are rising with very strong demand. These have low pops so this could be an area to watch.
In this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide several series appear to be on the collector radar. Early Proof Lincoln Cents are bringing Market prices in advance of previous levels. These were minted in low numbers, but the actual amount of coins available in the market is incredibly low. Further, to locate coins in PR63 and higher, dealers and collectors have to be prepared to pay very competitive prices. The 1909 VDB is a true rarity that advanced this week in grades PR64 and 65. The Market price for the PR64 RB is now $15,500 and the PR64 Red is $19,500. Most of the dates from 1909 to 1916 are showing strength in PR63 to 66.
Market prices for scarce date Silver Eagles are higher for several dates in MS70 this week. The 1991 is up to $2,250, the 1993 is at $2,125, the 1996 moved to $4,550, and the 1999 jumped to $12,500. A few other dates also advanced. Bear in mind that these are low pop dates and Registry collectors can be very aggressive. One area that has softened over the last few months is Proof Washington Quarters. There are numerous declines for dates 1936 to 1963 this week due to a lack of new collectors entering this market. The large amount of coins available in dealer inventory has a strong influence on these lower prices as well.
