NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
October 19, 2009
Pressure Mounting on Gold and Other Metals
This past week dealers and collectors have been concentrating on bullion coins. The strength of the bullion market has attracted a completely new group of investors that has increased demand for modern bullion coins. The premiums for Proof Gold Eagles and Proof Buffalo Gold have increased with this added demand. Buyers want original government packaging. Messages on the teletypes indicate dealers are even willing to buy just the packaging.
We are finding very selective adjustments for most Modern Coins. Many coins are so cheap that sellers are not willing to discount them any further, yet buyers are not really looking for any additional coins at this time. The Lincoln Cent chart has several increases for specific dates such as the 1934 D and 1935 D in MS65 Red. The market is up to $52 and $25, respectively. There are several declines for dates in MS67 where numerous coins have traded at discounts. Early Proof Lincoln Cents in the Teens are solid at current levels although not many have traded of late.
The majority of increases in this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide come from the bullion coins. Platinum and Gold are creating most of the sales in retail stores. Original Proof Silver Eagles have advanced to the $50 level for dealers. Again, buyers want the complete government packaging. Gold and Platinum coins in all grades up to 69 have increased as a reflection of the higher bullion prices. Some of the MS and Proof 70 issues have moved higher also. The only noticeable decline in the Modern Eagles chart is the 1995 W Proof Silver Eagle. We have seen more discounts on this coin than we have in quite some time. The Modern $5 & $10 Gold charts are covered with increases this week, as is the Buffalo Gold chart. Many buyers are in this market at today's prices.
