Durability Demonstrated in Baltimore

Dealers were expecting an active show in Baltimore and they were not disappointed this past week. Although it was not as strong as the most recent show last November, the Whitman Baltimore Coin Expo was still busy throughout for most dealers. Retail was down slightly but that was expected because of recent trends. Most dealers feel there has been less discounting in the last couple of weeks and that appears to be the case on the dealer teletype systems as well.

This week has begun with a large amount of wholesale activity on the teletypes. Modern bullion coins are still leading the overall market. Demand remains very strong and when coins are offered for sale, aggressive buyers immediately take advantage. The Ultra High Relief $20 Gold has limited supplies on the market; it seemed like all the UHRs available at the Baltimore Show were selling rather quickly. Prices are ranging from $1,600 to $2,450 depending on the grade; MS69 – MS70 Early Release. This week’s LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide is mostly stable at current levels. Dealers need Early Copper for their customers and the only requirement is that it is problem free.

Buyers are looking for Key date Indian Cents, 1877, 1908 S, and 1909 S; the 1909 S Market price is rising in several grades. The Lincoln Cent series has numerous increases including the 1909 S VDB in most circulated grades. The 1909 S, 1914 D, and 1922 no D are very active at present wholesale levels. The 1925 Lincoln in MS67 Red advanced to $2,000 Market and the 1924 D rose to $8,500 in MS65 Red. We are still finding some discounting in Mercury Dimes and Buffalo Nickels for the most common dates.
